Monday, 16 October 1972. Lieutenant Pigeon were topping the charts with Mouldy Old Dough.  At the heart of fashion were purple tank tops, flared jeans and stacked boots.  At your local cinema, you could have seen Cabaret with Liza Minelli, Marlon Brando in Last Tango in Paris or Shelly Winters in the Poseidon Adventure.  Alternatively, you could have stayed in and, over lunch at 1.30pm, you could have watched the first episode of a new, twice weekly television series called Emmerdale Farm.

In 1997, its silver jubilee year, the programme increased its output to three episodes a week and moved its outdoor filming to a purpose built village set on the Harewood Estate, near Leeds.
