It's Not A Rehearsal - The Autobiography

Amanda Barrie

It's Not A Rehearsal The Autobiography Amanda BarrieAmanda Barrie has been on the stage since she was three, when she performed at the theatre her grandfather ran.

She ran away to Soho at the age of 13 where she became a chorus girl before making her West End lead debut in "Public Mischief" with George Cole.

Throughout the 60s and 70s Amanda worked in theatre, television and film - including her famous role as Cleopatra in "Carry on Cleo" - before making her first appearance as Alma Sedgwick in Coronation Street in 1981.

In this honest account, Amanda not only recalls countless anecdotes from her professional life, she also reflects, with chraracteristic humour, on her personal life, including her affair with Billy Fury and unconventional marriage to actor Robin Hunter.

Reviews

I can only concur with the previous reviewers - this book is an absolute delight. I read a lot of biograpies and autobiographies and this is truly a brilliant, laugh-out-loud gem!!Amanda Barrie's personality comes through marvelously - her self-depricating humour it a joy . And credit must go too to her co-author and friend, Hillary Bonner, who allows that personality to shine in a way that I find quite wonderful. No arty touches, no literary affectations, just pure Amanda. This achievement is considerable. My only regret is that this book will not receive the attention it truly deserves because soap-stars have a short shelf life once they've left the fold. Ms Barrie and her book deserve far more.I hope you are reading this too, Amanda. I hope so because I want you and Hillary to know personally how great I think this book is. With your flair for comedy and Hillary's consumate skill you really should think about teaming up to write more. Much more!

What a brave woman Amanda Barrie is! Having left Coronation Street after twenty years, she is now just an ordinary actress searching for work, and no longer a soap star with a regular job. She could easily have killed her career stone dead with this book, revealing the details of her sexuality and her "unusual" marriage. Regardless of this, Ms Barrie has produced the most intimate, frank, open and honest autobiography I have ever read. With a great sense of humour and plenty of nitty-gritty details, she has taken a huge risk, and has put her professional career in danger. It has paid off hugely, and this bold, brave and unique woman has increased in my estimation still further. Wonderful.

I read this book after seeing an interview with Amanda Barrie and i found her personality and life story so interesting that I wanted to read the book. She tells her story in an amazing way, and you finish the book feeling both sad because its finished and inspired, by her strength and ability to say 'This is who I am, deal with it'. Read it.

I was interested in reading this lovely ladies biography as a fan of the carry on films (cleo being my favourite). However, I did not expect the life she has had to be so completely different to what I could have imagined. This book was written in such an upbeat way even through the sad parts it was still a joy to read. The book was very frank and honest and for quite some part very saucy!! For someone so accident prone and so funny it is amazing that she is still here to tell the tale of her exploits! I laughed out loud at some of the scenarios she found her self in although she has been through what the majority of people can only imagine. An excellant read and I would recommend it to anyone. Give it a go, you won't be disappointed.

I bought this book as I had always like Amanda Barrie in the Carry ons - Cleo being my favourite - but what a surprise I got when I read the ups and downs of this lovely ladies career & personel life. The book is written in such an upbeat way, and and so frank that even the moving and sad parts of the book are a joy to read. I laughed out loud when Amanda showed that not only is she a very hard worker and dilligent performer but also completely accident prone, down to earth and in places quite saucy. Not quite the quiet Alma Baldwin I was expecting. I enjoyed this book right from the beginning to the very end and cannot recommend it enough. It just proves the saying that you can't judge a book by its cover!
