Reviews

For those who have purchased the 1960's, 1970's and this, the 1980's Coronation Street boxset, I am sure that you would agree that the 60's and 70's are the most entertaining of the three sets. Throughout these years, Coronation Street retained a sense of humour but was equally dramatic and gritty, the latter of which, I believe is part of the show's appeal. However, the 1980's boxset, yes whilst dramatic, and humorous occasionally, has lost some of the appeal that the earlier two decades had. The only thing that I feel I can put this down to is that by 1984, most of the shows original characters had left, Elsie Tanner left in January of that year, and unfortunately, Stan Ogden died. They however, were only the last in a gradual succession of characters to have left in the early 80's. What occurs in the mid 1980's is that the show's focus switches onto a secondary group of characters, particularly the younger ones. Jack and Vera Duckworth replace Stan and Hilda Ogden as the most argumentative couple in the programme. Although, arguably, with their advantages, the two of these were never the same as the latter, and in places they became boring, as unlike Stan and Hilda, there is absolutely no compassion between them. Furthermore, the show gives rise to younger characters, who are no compensation for the loss of the original ones mentioned earlier. This is reflected by the fact that there is a big increase in the number of episodes featuring weddings. Although bearable at first, these soon get repetitive, however, I would say this compilation especially, would hold a lot of appeal to anybody interested in soap weddings. I would recommend getting this compilation as a follow on from the 60's and 70's, and also for those who wish to see how the show has progressed over the years. Do not misunderstand me, this boxset is entertaining and dramatic, personally, there is just not as much appeal as in the earlier two decades.

Having already purchased both the 1960's and 1970's Coronation Box Set's for my partner,I know have the 1980's. What's next, well we will just have to wait to see if they bring out a box set for the 1990's and beyond. All the Corrie Box Set's at present are excellent value for money, if you shop around for the best price of course.

For me the 70s was the golden age of the Steet and I feel that some of the story lines in the mid 80s were rather constrained by the loss of some male characters. This set is still well worth buying though. The big question for me and I suspect many others -is how long do we have to wait for the 90s box? Bring it on! Only 3 stars because there is no sub-titles or any extras.

For me, Coronation Street was at it's best in the 80s with brilliant characters such as Ivy, Jack and Vera, Elsie, Annie, Fred Gee, Stan and Hilda, Bet and Alec and many more in fine form. Betty Williams (then Turpin) even had some storylines. The stories in the 80s Coronation Street were brilliant and second to none. This is a must for all soap fans who are interested in the golden era of the Street. Highly recommened!

I already own the 70's compilation but would certainly NOT entertain the notion of paying just under £160.00 for this set. There are no special features of any kind and some of the footage looks decidedly ropey and in need of restoration. The box is just a flimsy lump of cardboard. No, Network/Granada need to think again if they want people to buy their boxed sets. Too expensive by far and NOT up to modern standards for a DVD release.
