Reviews
I bought this box set after being more than satisfied with the 1960s compilation. It's fair to say, I have no regrets. This set is hilarious, not only does it show many of the old characters at their best, whether it's Hilda Ogden arguing with Stan or Annie Walker attempting to outdo Nellie Harvey, this series shows British Society at it's best. The box set itself takes ages to get through, each disc lasts two hundred minutes! However, not only does the audience become hooked, but this collection should have you watching it over and over again without becoming boring. Most importantly, I must say that I disagree strongly with J.McDonald's critical review and therefore I feel that I must correct him. Firstly, there is a detailed synopsis of all of the episodes on these Coronation Street box sets, they are on the backs of the DVD cases. Secondly, each disc contains eight episodes from it's respective year, these include the key episodes of all the major story lines, and although the majority of the episodes were broadcast some months apart, they are relatively easy to follow, and a few follow on from the previous episode if that was the major storyline of that year. There may or may not be only one problem, depending on how you may see it. Although nearly all of the episodes are in colour, the four last episodes on the 1970 disc and the first episode on the 1971 disc are in black and white. This isn't a deliberate error, but because colour film could be difficult to obtain at the time, however following this, the rest of the episodes are in colour up until the end of the compilation. I am happy to have bought this box set and I will definitely be getting the 1980s set as soon as I have watched it!
Coronation Street was the series to watch, the first soap with lots of exiting happenings! I remember that some characters almost became their alteregos, the were more known as for instance 'Ena Sharples or Ken Barlow' or ' Elsie Tanner' then under their real names!
It's still happening in todays soapopera's.
But Coronation Street was and is still a joy to watch!
Don't believe any of the other reviews. If you are a true fan of Coro (or Corrie as most people call it, not our family) then this is a treat for you! Classic moments that a true fan would remember. There are no in -between links (like on previous Coro videos) but you can read the leaflet and put two and two together, unless you're particularly daft, because you will remember the story lines like only yesterday if you are a true fan! Well worth buying at this bargain price. I have both 70's and 80's, both equally as good. Hoping Santa will bring me the 60's one..but there is a bit of a wait according to Amazon!
Whilst thoroughly enjoying this compilation, I was irritated by the lack of a plot synopsis for each episode and a brief explanation of what happened afterwards. It looks as though this set was simpled cobbled together without any thought going into it other than pitching it at a premium price. That said, it is a facinating trip back in time and one which I would recommend to any fan of the series. No doubt in the near future, a 'new' boxed set will be offered complete with special features and plot outlines for even more money.
I grew up with Coronation Street in the 1970s and this box set afforded an excellent opportunity to revisit my childhood. With 80 episodes over 10 discs, this box set represents very good value for money. It's not quite perfect: there are no extras or sleeve notes, therefore assuming the viewer is very familiar with the programme and its characters. Some further explanation of the stories in each episode would have been beneficial. The technical quality of these episodes is a bit suspect. The actors continually fluff their lines, the camerawork is often wobbly and the boom microphone (or its shadow) frequently makes an appearance in shot! Nevertheless give me this to current-day Corrie any day. The standard of the writing in the episodes from 1976 onwards is consistently superb with genuine pathos and Lancashire humour in abundance. Compare this with the over-the-top caricature present in current-day Corrie and you'll appreciate just how the increase in the number of episodes currently churned out has affected the quality of the show over the last 10 years or so. The early episodes on this set are variable and see the programme trying to find its feet in a new decade and without some of the popular characters from the 1960s, but get this for the late 70s episodes, as these are the ones that represent Coronation Street at its best.
