Ballykissangel - Behind The Scenes
By Geoff Tibballs
With viewing figures of around 14 million, Ballykissangel is one of BBC TV's success stories of
recent years. Superbly written, wonderfully acted and beautifully filmed, the programmes easy charm, gentle pace
and quirky humor have enchanted its loyal audience on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond.
Rarely has a new drama series engendered such genuine affection, particularly for it's characters. Especially
tantalizing is the relationship between young English Catholic priest Peter Clifford and feisty bar owner Assumpta
Fitzgerald, but Ballykissangel is home to a wide variety of colorful individuals including roguish
businessman Brian Quigley, his head strung daughter Niamh and her pensive husband Ambrose Egan, the local
Garda.
The show's other star is of course its setting - the stunning Vale of Avoca in County Wicklow - and Geoff
Tibballs goes behind the scenes to discover the origins of the series, how the producers came to choose Avoca and
what the real villagers think of the show. As well as containing exclusive interviews with cast and crew, this book
is gloriously illustrated with on- and off-screen photographs capturing perfectly the magic of
BALLYKISSANGEL.
